Welcome from the Head

Inspire. Discover. Achieve. These are the key aims at Great Ballard School, a small, co-educational independent school in West Sussex, offering full and flexi-boarding and wraparound care for pupils from Nursery to 13 years.

Nestled in the heart of the South Downs National Park, one of only 12 International Dark Sky Reserves in the world, pupils enjoy small class sizes and quality traditional teaching along with outdoor activities which make the most of our 30 acres of beautifully maintained grounds.

As a family run school, families are at the heart of absolutely everything we do. My wife and I take fully active roles, helping support the children and their families who comprise the wider Great Ballard Community. Family values begin in the home. Add commitment to delivering quality educational and pastoral care care in an exceptional learning environment ('Excellent' ISI report) and you discover that it is not only what we can teach your children while they are here, but what they will go on to achieve after that is important.

On seeing Great Ballard School for the first time, it became clear to me that Great Ballard School sets itself apart from other schools not only in terms of quality teaching and small, dedicated class sizes but also for its stunning grounds and facilities here in the South Downs National Park.

If you have caught a glimpse of our school newsletter, you will see that alongside my headmaster duties, I am very passionate about the sport here at the school. As a keen rugby and cricket fan, including 4 years playing rugby for Saracens RFC, it is always a pleasure to accompany and support our school sports teams, particularly our home games where we host some fantastic match teas!

Our generous school grounds provide clean air and beautiful surroundings, offering a fantastic environment for children to learn and develop to reach their potential.

As a school, we were awarded a recent ‘excellent’ ISI inspection report last year which is something that myself and all the staff here at Great Ballard take great pride in. The school has a deserved reputation for providing a very personalised and caring all-around educational experience, where the many and varied abilities of each child can be both identified and developed, enabling all children to fulfil their potential.  The school is very well respected by the many senior schools across the South East that we send our pupils on to.

As an experienced Head, I am well aware that the life of a modern day Headmaster is always busy, interesting, and certainly extremely varied. However, I would have it no other way, as I enjoy the job I do and look forward to helping the children and Great Ballard itself to further flourish in the years ahead.

My background

Having taught specifically in Prep schools since 1990, where I joined Eagle House, the Prep School to Wellington College, I have held various positions of responsibility including Head of two departments, Director of Sport and Activities and Housemaster at Kings Hall Prep School in Taunton. This was followed by a Deputy Headship at Bishopsgate School near Windsor. My first Headship was at St Andrews School in Surrey, a position I enjoyed for five years, until taking over as Headmaster at Bromsgrove Prep School in 2008 and then in 2012 for 3 years as Headmaster of Craigclowan School in Perth, Scotland.

I am also an IAPS Headteacher appraiser, an elected member of the IAPS National Sports Committee and was for 3 years on the IAPS Membership Committee.
