Sport and more

Sport at Great Ballard is an important part of school life. Children throughout the school from Reception upwards will have weekly sport lessons - including swimming, tennis, netball, hockey, cricket, football, rounders and rugby - in our spacious grounds.

Long after the kit has been packed away, sport engenders a team spirit and personal sense of achievement which becomes part of the pupils' personal well-being. There are opportunities to play inter-house matches and participate in numerous inter-house termly competitions.

Facilities include our own swimming pool, sports field, tennis courts, astro pitch, dance studio, sports hall and acres of grounds for pupils to practice their chosen sport or interests such as mountain biking. Children can take dance classes, whilst the summer term's whole school camp in our own grounds is one of the highlights of the year.

As children move up through the school, from Form 3 onwards they will also have games on Monday and Tuesday as well as on Wednesday afternoons. There is the opportunity to play matches against other schools.

Sport at Great Ballard is all about opportunity, experience, enjoyment and striving for personal excellence whatever your ability.

Every child at Great Ballard will be given the opportunity to represent the school. This is very important to us, so we strive to arrange fixtures to match the abilities of the children, which can vary from county standard to beginner’s level. This helps all children to develop an enjoyment and appreciation of different sports, which usually remains with the children for the remainder of their school lives, and beyond into adult life.

The boys’ main team sports are football, rugby, hockey and cricket, while the main girls’ team sports are hockey, netball, rounders and tennis. In addition, there are a number of cross-country, athletics, tennis and swimming fixtures. The vast majority of our fixtures are against Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire Prep schools and take place during the week, with a few tournaments taking place at the weekend. Fixtures are published in advance in our termly calendar and parents are welcome to come and support.

There are also over the course of the year, both as part of our after school activities programme and during Thursday afternoon activities sessions, opportunities to experience and have a go at a number of different sports. These include golf, archery, orienteering, mountain biking, squash, volleyball, gymnastics and trampolining. In addition, as children move up through the school there is the opportunity to experience a number of outdoor pursuits.

Children from Reception upwards have after school sports clubs, and can take dance lessons. In addition, all children at Great Ballard have Forest School lessons and will learn about having fun and being safe in the outdoors, whilst developing their bush craft skills.
